Biography

I’m Laura, a graduate of BA Architecture and an experienced Studio Assistant with a demonstrated interest in sustainability and the arts and crafts industry. My goals in Architecture is to transform and facilitate our built environment into a place where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and protected.

Skills

Some of the skills that I developed during my studies include design development through 2D-3D, effective communication and collaboration, hand-drawing, drafting and practical knowledge of building construction with a special interest in sustainable construction technologies. I intend to apply these skills in the field of sustainable architecture and the integration of ecosystems within the urban landscape.

Work Experience

  • Studio Assistant

Studio Assistant at Frank Bowling Studios, where I assist the artist Frank Bowling OBE RA, in his daily painting sessions. As part of my role as assistant, I am also responsible for helping with documentation and managing of archival records, materials and legacy management.

  • Green Fund Live Project

This is a live project for a multi-sensory planter with integrating seating, as part of the University of Westminster’s sustainable development scheme.

Working in a team of fellow students and with a set fund budget, we are responsible for designing and building a prototype. This will provide outdoor social seating for students and aim to enhance their mental health and improve biodiversity.

  • Co-Design Workshop

Mental health and Well-being collaborative live project, working together with the students of Imperial College in interdisciplinary groups. The aim of this live project is the redesigning of healthcare spaces, our group focusing on the Stroke Ward, for which we aimed to propose a new design for a therapeutic and healing space that responded to the needs of its users and healthcare staff.

  • Site Diary

Work experience with RDA Architects on a Enerphit of a Victorian building into a Passivhaus family home for the main architect, Richard Dudzicki.

Green design and low-cost, self-sufficient home design often influences my design thinking. Learning from leading architects in in this field and recording the construction process taught me the importance and relevance of the high standards involved in Passivhaus, such as airtightness, passive heating and thermal bridging.

I have benefited greatly from this work experience and aspire to extend my knowledge in sustainable design throughout my education and future career.
